Sharing the Love

Let me start by going on record about something: I love Valentine’s Day. I know, it’s a manufactured holiday targeted to brainwash consumers into overpaying for flowers and heart-shaped chocolates. So what. I think any day that encourages us to find our inner romantic and pamper the ones we love is A-Okay in my book.

On the subject of love, My Dead Girlfriend continues to be showered by it in ways I could have never predicted.

It felt like Ain’t It Cool News had changed its name to Ain’t It Cool Wight yesterday. Not only did they give me a beautiful review for Action Comics, but they also ran an in-depth analysis of MDG as their AICN Anime Valentine’s Day Special.

“More honest than a rote high concept meet-cute romance, My Dead Girlfriend is the right comic for Valentine’s Day regardless of whether you're in love, out of love, or somewhere in-between.”

There’s a new interview with me over at Wizard Magazine Online, along with an excerpt from the first chapter of My Dead Girlfriend.

Meg Cabot, the prolific princess of young adult literature, featured MDG in her blog as her pick for the perfect Valentine’s Day present! She’s even giving away five autographed copies to the first fans that can email her the correct answer to a trivia question from my book.

Augie De Blieck gave MDG a great write up in his Pipeline column over at Comic Book Resources:

“It's genuinely hard to believe that this is Wight's debut comic. (He's done short bits here and there, but this is his major debut, in my opinion.) His storytelling and his art style are so strong out of the gate, you'd almost think he's been doing this for years.”

Brian K. Vaughan, the critically acclaimed author of such books as Y: The Last Man, Runaways, and Ex Machina, picked MDG as one of his top five comics for the week of February 14th!

"MY DEAD GIRLFRIEND: You may know award-winning artist Eric Wight's work from THE ESCAPIST or episodes of THE O.C. (he 'ghosted' all the art for Seth Cohen), but he's never looked better than in his new book from Tokyopop."

I want to send some VD love to my chums Allan Heinberg, Geoff Johns, and Brad Meltzer for also plugging MDG in their myspace blogs. Their support has been incredible throughout the entire process of making MDG, and I consider myself extremely lucky to have friends whose hearts are as big as their talent.

Don't forget, today is the final day to get your entries in at the Whedonesque Valentine's Day Contest. Hurry up and write that story before it's too late!

One last little note -- a very, very special thank you goes out to my good friend and savior Rob Feldman, who built the original blog for me and was able to get things up and running again today while I retighten all the nuts and bolts. When Rob’s not bailing my ass out, he’s busy creating The Hyrde and Dr. Shroud.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Okay, I feel like a dork doing this here, but I couldn't figure out how else to reach you. Eric...I love your work! I have a (please don't groan) comic book podcast called STUN (http://stunpodcast.wordpress.com) and I'd love to interview you for it. I'm a Chicago radio guy, and the station I work for (Q101/WKQX-FM) actually promotes the podcast on-air. I'm hoping for a 15-minute phone interview; let me know if you'd be up for it!

Thanks for your consideration,

Hi Eric,

It was great to meet you at the NYC Con and thanks not only for the cool Jenny sketch, but the great read for the long train ride home.

Joss Whedon's blurb on the back of Vol. 1 of "My Dead Girlfriend" perfectly captures how I feel about the book. The only thing I would add is that my three favorite words in the book were "to be continued" because you've created a world that I want to visit again and again.

Thanks again, Brian.

P.S. Your and Finney's Jenny has taken a place in my heart right alongside of Molly from the Perhapanauts by Todd DeZago and Craig Rousseau.

hi eric!
I love your artworks! I've known of you because of The O.C. and, now that it's over, could you post something about that or sell some Atomic County stuff?
And then, I haven't been able to find any VCast about The O.C.

Just picked up MDG yesterday and loved it! I'm impatiently awaiting the next installment! Anyway, I have a few suggestions.
1. Consider adding character bios to volume 2.
2. Have you considered putting Finney in a band? He seems like he might be a good drummer, and since the dead don't sleep, they wouldn't mind late-night practice. A cool name for a band might be "Who is Pixie Dark?" which is a line from Steven King's Cell.
3. I'm hoping to see some non-western monster types, like tengu. Also, the involvement of a student who "plays for the other team" might be an interesting additional twist to the love triangle that seems to be setting up...

hey
i'm a fan of your drawingstyle.
i really like how you do a connection between the good old comic style and a new pop style.
Who or what are your greatest influence?
And do you use real ink or india ink?

have a nice weekend

Good to see you have My Dead Girlfriend up on the shelves now - I haven't seen it around my parts as of yet but good work! Guess what - I'm actually GOING to art school next year! Only NSCAD (Nova Scotia School of Art and Design) but still, it's one step closer to my goal. I've also got a tablet now and my works are improving a looot since we last spoke. Anyway, I look forward to seeing My Dead Girlfriend if it EVER appears here in Cape Breton :p

I see nothing anywhere about a second book. There hasn't even been a blog post in a year. I've never really gotten into Manga, but I really enjoyed this book, is there any chance of a second?

Hello Eric Wight. I was just wondering when are you making the next volume of my dead girlfriend? Because, I just can't get enough of your comic. It's absolutely, positively the most unique storyline I've ever read. Please write back and give a release date for Volume 2. It would be much appreciated.
