Almost The Atomic County Graphic Novel

The closest I ever came to making the Atomic County graphic novel was this three page spread that appeared in the April 10-15 ‘05 issue of TV Guide. The WB and TV Guide thought it would be really cool to do a fake exclusive of the graphic novel. The only catch was that I had less than a week before the issue went to press. So what you see before you was written and drawn (co-written by O.C. producer John Stephens) in a four day stretch. I went from a Monday to a Thursday on less than four hours sleep, and in order to save time I drew a lot of it directly with ink. But TV Guide sent me a big basket of cookies from Harry & David as a thank you, so it was all worth it in the end.

* Note: you can get me to do practically anything for cookies -- I’m worse than my dog Kirby.

Eric, you rock. I've been wearing my "Summer" t-shirt to DEATH and people are always commenting on it (the Little Miss Vixen mock up x3 off the OC website). I'm your biggest fan from Alameda, CA. Keep up the awesome drawing & creativity!!!

The atomic county comic looks amazing and me..being someone who isnt interested in comics, has now become interested by you and your atomic county comic on the oc. I would love to be able to have a copy of atomic county and really really hope that you decide to make atomic county into an actual full blown comic/graphic novel.

Please make atomic county a graphic novel! (or comic)

haha it's a pleasure to be able to see this! great work on these 3 pages, definitely - that stress with the 4 days deadline was worth it, and not just because of the cookies! :D

Would it not be possible to draw an Atomic County Comic? I mean, there are many OC-fans which would be glad and which would buy the comic... The three sites are so brilliant!

A fan from Germany...

Hi!!!!!! Just want to congratulate you on your amazing work! Your style and creativity, not to mention your surreal ability to depict the world with a pen, really brings the settings and situation to life. I hope you carry on with your work and also that you make Atomic County into a full-blown Graphic Novel. It would be amazing to see! Thanks for posting the three pages- I enjoyed reading them!!!!! All the best! Sandy

I'm certainly late to saying this, Eric, but this really is stunning. The writing and the art combination is just super- and all of it was done so quickly!

Eric, this comic is sweet... But i have a question for you or anyone with a knowledge. was this comic colored using Photoshop...and if not how?

Mastermind, I color everything using Photoshop. I know a few guys that use Painter, but most prefer Photoshop. A great site to check out for tips is www.gutterzombie.com. You'll find a lot of comic pros on there talking about their techniques.

Do you use photoshop to do the black inking or do you use actual ink(sharpie markers for example).

I use a sable brush and India ink for my black lines. Some of the smaller detail is done with nib tips or micron pens, but I'd say 85% is brush.
